Hyundai Universal Wheel Drive System

If you drive one of the many Hyundai EVs available now, you probably love how it performs. These sporty models have fantastic handling and provide a smooth ride. However, it may not be long before they offer even better performance. Hyundai has developed something that would replace the constant velocity (CV axle), and here Kearny Mesa Hyundai discusses this innovation.

Introducing the Universal Wheel Drive System

Right now, Hyundai EV models use a CV axle – also known as a half-shaft – to transfer the power from the transmission to the wheels. While an excellent way to get a car moving, Hyundai believes they’ve found a better way to do it. The Universal Wheel Drive (Uni Wheel) would take the place of the CV axle to improve comfort and efficiency.

How Does the Universal Wheel Drive System Work?

The Uni Wheel utilizes a planetary gearshift in which the sun gear gets power from the electric motor. Four pinion gears on both sides of the sun gear drive the planet gear. These are arranged in linkages, and they are designed to move both up and down and side to side while driving the planet gear. As the wheels of the car move, the pinion gear linkages also move, but the sun and planet gears stay in place. Hyundai says that the Uni Wheel will help improve the vehicles’ ride quality and boost their fuel efficiency.
