Here at Kearny Mesa Hyundai, we sell a wide variety of new and pre-owned Hyundai cars to San Diego, CA, drivers and inform them how to use all the advanced features on the vehicles. If you’re driving with small children, you’ll surely be using the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system, the child restraint system in most Hyundai models. Here is an overview of how to use the LATCH system correctly.

Installing the Car Seat

After selecting a proper car seat for your child based on their age and weight, make sure that the seat itself is compatible with the LATCH system. The system is designed to hold a child restraint during driving and to ensure it’s secure in an accident. Its overarching purpose is to make installing the child restraint easier and reduce the possibility of installing it incorrectly.

The LATCH system uses anchors in the vehicle and attachments on the child restraints and eliminates the need for seat belts to secure the car seat to the rear seats.

To install the child restraint with the LATCH anchors system:

  1. Move the seat belt buckle away from the lower anchors.
  2. Move other objects away from the anchors that could prevent a secure connection
  3. Place the child restraint on the vehicle seat. Attach the seat to the lower anchors according to the instructions on the car seat
  4. Follow the instructions to properly adjust and tighten the lower attachments on the child restraint to the lower anchors
