





SAN DIEGO -- Memorial Day weekend is traditionally a profitable one for car dealerships but local Hyundai dealers did not have not to wait for a holiday weekend to see record sales."We're very excited," said Hyundai customer Cynthia Johnson, who shopped around before choosing to buy a Hyundai Elantra.She told 10News Mazda and Honda were her list but two things pushed Hyundai over the top.
Gas mileage… with the price of gas, that was a big issue for us and I was looking for a safe car since [my daughter is] going to be driving it in a year and a half," said Johnson.Both safety and fuel efficiency were two areas the automaker has made dramatic gains.With the average gas price in California still more than $4, fuel efficiency is key. Hyundai's Elantra is number one among non-hybrids cars."It is a real fuel-efficient car. The Elantra gets 40 miles to the gallon and that's the highest in its class," said Dave McCracken, the general manager of Kearny Mesa Hyundai Subaru.Automakers Toyota and Honda have both taken hits following Japan's earthquake and tsunami in March.Though Hyundai gets some parts from Japan, McCracken said they have not been impacted as dramatically.Over the years, the company has improved design and safety while managing to keep prices lower than competitors."In anything, it takes a while to rebuild an image or enhance an image but people in this economy with the information explosion… they catch on fast," said McCracken.The Hyundai dealership in Kearny Mesa is reaping the benefits. Sales are up 57 percent compared to this time last year and they're the fastest growing dealership in San Diego County.But with all their success, Hyundai ranked 7th in nationwide sales last month, trailing Ford and Chevrolet.Still, the company is optimistic it can continue changing minds and winning customers.

Genuine Hyundai Parts or Accessories supplied by Hyundai and purchased from an authorized Hyundai Dealer, but not installed by an authorized Hyundai Dealer, are covered for 12 months / unlimited miles.
Accessories installed on a vehicle at the time of or prior to the vehicle's date of first use are covered under the 5-Year / 60,000-Mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Accessories installed after the vehicle's date of first use are covered for 12 months / 12,000 miles.
